Versatile Bracing for Existing Wood Stretcher Frames

Artwork that’s been stretched on an inadequate frame may be starting to sag or twist so it no longer hangs flat against the wall. In addition to being unsightly, this can damage the artwork over time. If the artwork can’t be restretched on a new frame, our Universal Braces may provide the solution. Designed to work with any wooden stretcher frame from any supplier, they provide keyable support without having to remove the canvas.

NOTE

Please be aware that a proper, keyable stretcher frame with adequate tension is needed to support the long-term health of a canvas painting. If dealing with a valuable artwork (monetary or sentimental), we advise you to consult an art conservator for advice on how to handle a sagging, twisted, warped, or damaged painting.

Braces will also only help if the frame is twisted, not warped. Warping is when the wood is bowed, typically because the wood grain is not straight and has reacted to a humidity change. If the frame is twisted/racked, it is because the stretcher frame is under too much tension causing two corners to lift off the wall, typically on the diagonal/kitty-corner from each other. If the frame is twisted, a brace may help but if it is warped you will need a new stretcher for the painting.*
